I retired from a large telecommunications company. After I retired I started working for some smaller companies. Then I was laid off. Boy, trying to find a decent job for older Americans is nuts. The hiring folks don’t even have the courtesy of sending an e-mail back(rejection notice) or anything. I surely hope these younger folks have some good old-fashioned work ethics. But, I haven’t seen too much of it lately.
I am sorry to say, in my opinion only, that todays younger workers do not think beyound the present. As far as employers are concerned, again in my own opinion, they lack the decent manners we were taught in our youth. Loyalty seems to run a one way street from employee up to employer and does not return. Many years ago I applied to a company for employment and received a personal letter from the head of the company thanking me for taking the time to send a application for employment and explaining in detail that I had a fine background but not quite the skills needed for that particular job. An era gone and sadly missed. Good luck Linda, I hope you find what you are looking for. John
Maybe you people will listen. Those on Social Security are being cheated of their COLAS through an accounting scheme that produces an artificially low cost of living increase. The scheme is called RENTAL EQUIVALENCE. It works like this:
Obviously, housing cost is a major part of the cost of living equation. They are distorting this by using what they call ” RENTAL EQUIVALENCE “.
Here’s may situation, which I’m sure is similar to many others on SS. My mortgage ( my real housing cost ) is about $800.00 per month. Instead of figuring in that value, they figure in what they think!!! I could get by renting my home. Obviously in our bad economy that figure is lower than it was two years ago. However, my cost is not what they think I could get by renting. It is still $800.00 per month! So, when you figure in the cost of all the other things I have to buy, my cost of living has risen substantially.
This is an issue that could have changed the recent election, had the conservative politicians picked up on it.
I created a website to deal specifically with this outrage of cheating those of us who have contributed to Social Security for 45-50 years. http;//www.socialsecurityisbeingcut.info/welcome.html
While we have not been alloowed our cola for 2 years and will continue to be disallowed. The people who make those rules get their raises on a salary that they vote for of $175,000 a year + who knows what. I am suppose to get along on $1216. a month. What a bunch of hippocrites and liers. Do I sound mad. I sure hope so, because UI am as mad as hell. Especially when hera one of the condesendoing s.o.b. make their excuses and rationalizations.
I am 65 and seeking jobs opportunities; however, these HR folks are, for the most part, under40 and have no idea what value we bring to the work place. Companies require you fill out form after form and 100 questions on not sealing, drug test, etc. and never even respond that you are not being considered. I am sick of this!
I am proud that our generation did not conduct ourselves this way when we were in charge or none of these kids would have ever been given a chance.
