President Continues on Economic Road to Ruin

60 Plus Chairman Jim Martin: “President wants to widen the lanes of highway to economic ruin.”

(Alexandria, Virginia) – 60 Plus Chairman Jim Martin, leader of the largest conservative seniors advocacy group in the nation, today responded to President Obama’s press conference on raising the national debt ceiling, where he again insisted a deal must include trillions in new taxes on the American people:

“Once again the President failed the leadership test by demanding that the road to a budget deal be paved with new taxes.  But Washington has taken this road again and again, and it is exactly why we have an ailing economy and historic debt of mammoth proportions.  This is the highway to economic ruin, and the President wants to widen the lanes.

“Unfortunately this President is wedded to failure, and believes compromise means swallowing less poison than previously swallowed.  Raising our debt limit on the backs of working Americans – who are already footing a bill of over $40,000 per man woman and child – is a massive failure of leadership and accountability, and exactly why 7 out of 10 Americans disapprove of his handling of the economy.

“What a distortion of the language to call tax increases ‘responsible’ – there is absolutely nothing responsible in handing Washington more of our money so they can continue to spend us into debt.  ‘Responsible’ means only one thing; cut spending, PERIOD.”
