Seniors Cheer Death Tax Repeal Vote in House

239 – YEA, 179 – NAY

Jim Martin: “America owes a debt of gratitude for all the Members who stood strong against all the false rhetoric to support complete and total repeal of the death tax.”

(Alexandria, Virginia) — The 60 Plus Association, the nation’s largest right-leaning seniors organization with over 7.2 million supporters today cheered the House passage of Rep. Kevin Brady’s (R-TX) Death Tax Repeal Act of 2015, H.R. 1105, which passed by more than 60 votes on a bi-partisan roll call of 239 in support with 179 opposed. It was the first vote on the repeal of the death tax in 10 years, which last occurred in April of 2005.

60 Plus has been the national leader for more than two decades in pushing for a repeal of the federal estate tax, which now stands at a 40% take for the federal government upon the death of a loved one. 60 Plus Chairman Jim Martin is largely credited for keeping its public ‘death tax’ moniker alive.

Said Martin, “This is a great day for all people seeking to achieve the American Dream through hard work, saving and aspiring to a better life for themselves and their families. It is a great day for family run businesses, farms and ranches, who are too often destroyed by this abominable tax.

“As Ronald Reagan said, ‘It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit,’ and there are a lot of people who worked tirelessly to make this happen, both Republican and Democrat. But we know we are not finished yet, there is still more work to be done to make death tax repeal a reality.

“When 70% of the American people consistently support death tax repeal, it’s time for both the Congress and the President to act. This tax is not aimed at the rich, who hire lawyers and accountants to hide their assets, but at small family businesses, who succeed spectacularly over many years only to have the government steal the sweat and toil of a lifetime. It is unfair, it is cruel, it is un-American, and it needs to be dead and buried once and for all!”
