President Proclaims May National Physical Fitness And Sports Month

Statement By 60 Plus Association President James L. Martin

Arlington, VA — President Bush has proclaimed the month of May as “National Physical Fitness and Sports Month” and the 60 Plus Association heartily commends him for so doing.

Physical fitness is, without question, an integral part of a healthy life and a healthy America. And we know that proper exercise figures prominently in the lives of all citizens, including senior citizens.

Regular physical activity builds strength, increases lung capacity and keeps senior citizens motivated. It prompts better eating and diet maintenance while helping avoid sleep disorders; frankly, I maintain a daily dose of exercise keeps anyone feeling younger, but especially, senior citizens.

We at 60 Plus ‘walk the walk’, by the way, and know of what we speak. As President of the Association, I know I’m healthier for my daily one mile swim and my senior softball and senior basketball activities. Honorary Chairman Roger Zion, a hale 82, also swims on a regular basis, plays paddle ball and racquet ball and gets plenty of fresh air playing golf. Honorary Co-Chairman Beau Boulter is a vigorous walker while National Spokesman Pat Boone is an avid runner, tennis player and golfer, likewise.

Senior Citizens are more active today in retirement than any generation before. My favorite senior, my mom, is an active 88 while her husband, my stepfather, is living at home at age 104 and God willing, will celebrate his 105th on September 25th. I’d exhort seniors of all ages to stay active by participating in some from of physical activity. Your life will improve and the lives of those who love you will appreciate the effort.
