Attorney General Adam Laxalt

Dear Governor Sandoval and Attorney General Laxalt:

On behalf of our over 65,000 Nevada senior citizen supporters of The 60 Plus Association, we urge you to do everything in your power to stop the EPA’s impending “Clean Power Plan” that will dramatically raise electricity prices on our state’s aging population – many of whom are on tight fixed incomes.

The EPA’s rule was finalized in October and will have far-reaching consequences on Nevadans’ pocketbooks. For instance, a recent study conducted by the independent research firm National Economic Research Associates estimated that Nevada energy customers would see their electric rates increase by 19% annually, on average through 2032 under EPA’s Clean Power Plan. The impacts of high energy costs fall disproportionately on Nevada’s elderly residents and others on fixed incomes. According to the Social Security Administration, as of 2014, there were over 400,000 residents age 65 or older.

In this difficult economy, where most seniors are still struggling to get by, such a massive increase in the cost of a necessity like electricity will be devastating.

Further yet, the EPA’s regulations favor specific (and often) unaffordable energy alternatives and away from more reliable current sources. This represents a huge shift toward expensive and unreliable “renewable” energy sources.

There is a way for Nevada to fight back. The 60 Plus Association urges every electricity consumer in Nevada to join us in encouraging you to join 27 other states and sue the EPA over its illegal plan. Nevada’s most vulnerable are counting on it. Thank you for your time and consideration regarding this important matter.

Sincerely,

Matthew Kandrach
Vice-President
