Seniors Group Hails SCOTUS Ruling on EPA Mercury Regulation

Jim Martin: “This ruling saves millions of seniors from paying skyrocketing electric bills they just cannot afford.”

(Alexandria, Virginia) — The non-partisan 60 Plus Association, America’s largest center-right seniors advocacy organization with over 7.2 million supporters nationally, applauded a ruling issued today by the Supreme Court striking down an EPA regulation on Mercury and Air Toxins (MATS). The regulation was a key component of President Obama’s attack on so-called climate change, but failed to pass muster with the Court due to its wholesale disregard for analyzing the full costs imposed by the regulation.

Said 60 Plus Chairman Jim Martin, “Like all great liberal experiments, the EPA MATS regulation failed to consider the massive price tag to be shouldered by the public. As the Court noted, an administration has no right to impose regulations unilaterally, outside the scope of Congress while failing to ignore whether the costs outweigh the benefits. It is a tremendous victory for Americans everywhere struggling to make ends meet, keep their lights on, and most importantly weather the scorching summers and freezing winters, seniors on fixed incomes especially.

“Obama’s EPA has shown itself time and again to be above the law in its contemptuous disregard for recognizing the limits of its power, and setting course on an extreme environmental agenda regardless of the impact, pain and suffering its rules will visit on ordinary Americans. Today’s ruling is a great triumph for the rule of law, one that hopefully will be repeated in the months to come as more of the EPA’s reckless and senseless regulations come under Court scrutiny.”
